On August 15, student filmmakers and movie buffs alike gathered at the Full Sail University Orlando Health Fortress for the second annual Veteran Student Union (VSU) Film Festival. The event featured 13 original student-made films, red carpet interviews, awards, Q&As with the film crews, and more.

Before the screenings, filmmakers and their crew walked the red carpet in full glam and spoke with interviewers about their projects. Then, with excitement buzzing through the Fortress, viewers were captivated by the original short films made by Full Sail students, from psychological thrillers Drive Safe and The Arcade Attendant to military drama Smokes and horror film The Roommate. After each screening concluded, applause filled the room as cast and crew members of the project took the stage to answer questions from audience members and share information about filming locations, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and the inspiration behind their creations.

Throughout the evening, 10 3D-printed trophies were awarded to films in various categories such as Most Original, Best Score, and Audience Choice, which viewers cast votes for online.

During the festival, attendees could grab popcorn, snacks, and Red Bull – which sponsored the event – to enjoy while watching the films, and raffle prizes from Full Sail’s merch shop the hangR were given to several lucky winners. Remote viewers could also tune in via a livestream on Zoom. During an intermission, a panel featuring alumni and instructors took the stage to answer questions and impart wisdom to students passionate about filmmaking.

“This event created an opportunity for our students to display their projects, skills, and professionalism,” said Sandy Navarro, Veteran and Military Outreach Representative and Community Liaison. “[They had the chance to] network, receive constructive criticism, learn and share best practices, and show their imagination. [We hope] they take pride in their work and are motivated and encouraged to achieve their goals.”
