Orlando Health and Full Sail University teamed up this week to host an Adaptive Gaming Showcase, bringing together healthcare, technology, and gaming. An estimated three billion people play video games worldwide, but traditional controllers can prevent those with disabilities from joining in the fun. During the free community event, attendees had the opportunity to learn about and test adaptive controllers, meet the local students developing the technology, and see how the innovations are making the gaming industry more inclusive.

“We’re always looking for ways to personalize care for our patients and go beyond just their medical needs, and we saw an opportunity to bring awareness to the adaptive gaming technology,” said Christine Davidson, senior director of outpatient rehabilitation operations at the Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute. “People who have limited function in their hands, such as stroke or spinal cord injury survivors, are able to play again, which can make a huge impact on quality of life and community reintegration.”

Orlando Health looked to Full Sail University, educational leaders in entertainment media and emerging technologies, to bring the showcase to life. It was held inside the Full Sail University Orlando Health Fortress, the largest collegiate esports arena in the country.

“Hosting the Adaptive Gaming Showcase on our campus alongside our partners at Orlando Health was an incredible opportunity for the community to engage with the transformative capabilities found within accessible game design shown in the projects our students and graduates are taking from concept to completion in the adaptive gaming space,” said Robin Koman, course director, Game Design Masters, Full Sail University. “It was an honor to be a part of this event, and to see two of our students awarded with scholarships was absolutely inspiring.”

As part of their ongoing partnership, Orlando Health presented scholarships to two Full Sail University students during the event. The Game Design Masters students, Lui de Brito and Lucas Fuica have been working on projects including adaptive gaming technology during their time at Full Sail University. They were each awarded $10,000 in scholarship funds.
