On March 3, Full Sail University’s Latin Club hosted a Carnival celebration. Planned and executed by the club’s student officers, the event invited faculty, staff, and students to take part in a cultural celebration, connect with the Full Sail community, and just have fun.

At the Backlot, attendees enjoyed delicious street food and nonstop music while they got their faces painted, made colorful Carnival masks, tried on handmade Carnival wings, and posed for pictures at the photo booth.

We hope students saw from the event that there are many different ways to celebrate the same tradition.”

“Carnival is the Latin American equivalent to Mardi Gras in the U.S., and while it began as a religious prelude to the 40-day period of Lent, it evolved into a powerful expression of cultural identity, resistance, and freedom,” shared Sandi Foncannon, International Student Coordinator at Full Sail.

“Though Carnival originated in Europe, enslaved Africans transformed the festival into the vibrant spectacle it is today. We hope students saw from the event that there are many different ways to celebrate the same tradition. It opens their eyes to the diverse culture around the globe, not just their backyards here in the U.S.”
