Students and Staff Celebrate MLK Jr. Day
To honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, Full Sail students performed live music at a Unity Celebration and walked in a parade.
On Saturday, January 17, Full Sail University students and staff gathered at Kissimmee Lakefront Park for the Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Celebration, organized by the City of Kissimmee to honor King and his legacy.
Tents were set up throughout the park with vendors selling food and gifts and community partners offering their services. Full Sail was also present with two booths where members of the Black Student Union and Outreach and Admissions staff engaged with visitors by handing out snacks and swag, offering games of giant Connect 4, chess, and cornhole, and sharing info about the university.
The showstopper of the event featured four Full Sail students performing an hour-long artist showcase for the crowd. The audience danced along as the students performed covers of songs by Black artists, as well as original raps riffing off Dr. King's famous “I Have a Dream” speech and celebrating the Black experience. One student shared an original spoken-word poem, touching on themes of African heritage and activism, to approving snaps from the crowd.
In addition to the Unity Celebration, 50 students and staff also walked in the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Downtown Orlando, wearing “Dream, March, Inspire” t-shirts, carrying Full Sail banners, and handing out candy to kids. Above all, they shared Full Sail pride and positive vibes with the crowd, celebrating the civil rights legacy of Dr. King.
